The University of California at Berkeley’s Center for Biopharmaceutical Operations partners with Industrial and Government organizations to advance the art and practice of biopharmaceutical production operations and logistics.
The Center brings together world-class, interdisciplinary academic researchers with diverse industrial experience and operations managers and engineers in the biopharmaceutical industry.
CBO focuses on specific, critical issues facing this industry with the aim of developing practical methodologies, measures, and tools to improve operations. Researchers, managers, and engineers collaborate to design and implement more cost-effective and reliable production systems and supply-chains for manufacturing and distributing safe and effective drugs. |

CBO presents Facility Fit model at Bioprocess International Conference
Rick Johnston presented CBO work on the role of operational data in Facility Fit models at the industry's leading operations conference, Bioprocess International. His work focused around integrating operational plant data into late-stage process design. This allows a much more accurate view of process fit, speeding technology transfer as well as accurately estimating key parameters like run rate.

CBO's work presented in top Biopharm International Magazine
CBO research was presented by Rick Johnston in the prestigious Biopharm International Journal. The August 2009 article, entitled 'Garbage In, Garbage Out: The Case for More Accurate Process Modeling in Manufacturing Economics' was a case study revealing the importance of accurate process modeling in Biopharmaceutical Operations.

| Bioproduction Forum |
In Fall 2007, the University of California at Berkeley formally recognized the need for further research in biopharmaceutical operations with the establishment of a forum for operational issues in biopharmaceuticals. The forum is problem focused, drawing from industry expert speakers to understand current operations issues facing the Biopharmaceutical industry. Previous speakers VPs and Senior VPs from Bayer and Genentech - the two largest biopharmaceutical manufacturers in the Bay Area – as well as the ex-CSO of Celera Genomics, ex-VP of Process Development at Chiron, and 10 other experts in their respective fields.
The Bioproduction Forum has attracted over 50 students and professors from eight different departments, including Bioengineering, Biophysics, Industrial Engineering, Economics and Biochemistry – making it one of the most strongly inter-disciplinary courses on campus.
|
| Bioproduction Project Course |
| In this highly competitive project course, teams of interdisciplinary students will collaborate together to outline the issues in one specific area of the Biotech industry. Working closely with extensive Industry and Academic support, teams will formulate questions and initial approaches which are practical and interesting to both academia and industry. This course has support from over a dozen industry mentors from leading Biotech companies in the Bay Area such as Genentech, Bayer and Biomarin.
|
| Outreach: Bioproduction Workshops |
On February 16th and 17th 2006, the IEOR department hosted a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on Biomanufacturing and Logistics Systems. The objective of this workshop was to bring together Bay Area representatives from academia, the biopharmaceutical industry, and other interested contributors to develop a manufacturing and logistics systems research agenda for biomanufacturing.
Future workshops have built on this foundation to generate research in this field.
